"Remember the Past, Get Ready for the Future”
Listen up and be alert to these dreadful disasters. Many people have gone through a lot thanks to Mother Nature. Hurricanes (in New Orleans) and even tornadoes have caused so much damage in the United States! From the experience of those devastated by these events, we can take precautions to make sure we’re extra ready for another round. I wouldn’t want this to happen to you!!! So read on and you might survive.
First, I’ll talk about hurricanes. Let’s remember Hurricane Katrina that took place in New Orleans. The levees broke and two bodies of water filled the poorest parts of the city like cereal in a bowl. That caused a lot of damage to the people of that city. Several people were badly injured and many were even killed. We can learn a lot from that event. For starters, our government has been more proactive when they see a possible storm coming. People are almost required to leave so that no chances are taken. As citizens, we also need a backup plan. As soon as the news tells you of a possible hurricane landing near you, take precautions It’s better to be safe than sorry. You should have all important information, such as birth certificates and driver’s licenses, kept somewhere safe so you can just grab and go. It may be a good idea to shop for reasonably priced clothing so that you can have packed bags, especially if you live somewhere where you know a hurricane can strike. Always keep canned goods because electricity almost always goes out in storms. Those are just a few things that we as people can do to help ourselves in a disaster like this.
Next up are tornadoes. A lot of people in the Midwest, as well as the South experience these. When they come, they will swerve around sucking up any and every item outside. A major tornado went through Tuscaloosa, AL where the University of Alabama is. The pictures were horrifying. There’s something else we can learn from. For one, you shouldn’t go outside until you are sure that the tornado has officially passed. You and your family need to take shelter in either a basement or a room with no windows. Your supply pack should already be in a designated spot. Make sure there is plenty of water, canned goods and a weather radio that you can listen to. Tornadoes are so unpredictable but you must act fast at all times in stormy weather.
Kids today can do a lot to help others get prepared. Talking is the first step. Let others know about these events, especially if you’ve gone through it yourself. Be a leader and show others what to do. Then hopefully they will inform others.
