Top Georgia Chefs competing in Ready Georgia’s No Power? No Problem! Recipe Contest
Public school teacher competing against six of Georgia’s best chefs in contest to find tastiest emergency recipe
(ATLANTA) – If you have ever lost electricity due to a power outage, you understand how difficult it can be to prepare a good meal. Is it even possible to prepare a delicious meal using only non-perishable ingredients, manual cooking tools and alternative heating sources? That’s the challenge that seven chefs have accepted in the second annual No Power? No Problem! Recipe Contest.
During National Preparedness Month in September, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security (GEMA/HS) Ready Georgia campaign is asking for the public’s help in choosing the tastiest emergency recipe. From Sept. 8 through Sept. 30 Georgia residents can vote daily for their favorite of seven recipes submitted for the contest, which is designed to raise awareness about the importance of stocking at least a three-day supply of water and food.
“According to a recent statewide study, two out of three Georgians have stocked a three-day supply of food and water in case of an emergency,” said GEMA/HS Director Jim Butterworth. “That’s good news, but we want to see that number even higher. The No Power? No Problem! Recipe Contest is a great way for us to remind Georgians about the importance of stocking the right supplies and to demonstrate that it’s possible to create a tasty meal even if your power goes out.”
While last year’s contest was limited to just professionals, this year’s competition includes Fayette County elementary school teacher Julie Murphy, who captured first place in the first ever No Power? No Problem! amateur recipe contest in July. Her recipe for salmon pie is competing against delectable dishes such as truck stop noodles with braised beef jerky and cheesy chicken tacos. The full list of participating chefs includes:
- Hugh Acheson: Split Pea Soup with Beef Jerky, Parsley, Orange and Capers
- Kevin Gillespie: Chicken and Rice
- Gillespie is a “Top Chef” contestant and James Beard “Rising Star Chef” award finalist. He is also owner of Gunshow in Atlanta and Revival, opening in Decatur this month.
- Lance Gummere: Truck Stop Noodles with Braised Beef Jerky
- Doug Sanneman: Lights Out Bouillabaisse
- Sanneman is executive chef of Dovetail in Macon.
- Jason Starnes: Cheesy Chicken Tacos
- Starnes is executive chef of The Sun Dial in Atlanta. His recipe for Chicken Dijon Risotto was voted the winning recipe in the 2014 No Power? No Problem! Contest.
- Doug Turbush: Curried Chicken and Rice
- Julie Murphy: Salmon Pie
- Murphy was selected as the No Power? No Problem! amateur contest winner in early August. She teaches at Kedron Elementary in Fayette County.
From Sept. 8 through Sept. 30, Georgia residents 18 and older can vote once a day for their favorite “no power” recipe via the Ready Georgia Facebook page. Each person that votes will be entered into a random drawing to win one of three weekly prizes featuring a Ready kit full of emergency supplies and $50 in gift cards to participating chefs’ restaurants. The grand prize winner will take home a Ready kit and $100 in restaurant gift cards at the conclusion of the contest.
